Global Primary Care contributes to the sustainability of the projects that are collaborations between the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) at the National University of Laos, Vientiane, Laos, and the Global Health Collaborative in the Department of Family Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. The focus of the collaboration is to produce a new Laotian specialty of Family Medicine by creating a Family Medicine Master’s degree program and establishing Family Medicine training centers around the country. This approach aims to improve primary health care for disadvantaged people living in rural communities.

Specific projects currently being implemented include:

  • Established FM training centers in central and provincial hospitals
  • Conducting a needs assessment of rural physicians and developing a plan to meet those needs
  • Secure approval of a national curriculum for a Master’s in Family Medicine
  • Implement a distance-learning Family Medicine program for re-training physicians in rural areas

These projects and other supported by Global Primary Care ensure that the benefits are long lasting. The Laotian doctors who receive this specialized training in Family Medicine can meet the needs of the population of Laos for many years to come.

Your tax-deductible contributions to Global Primary Care support these and other efforts to improve access to basic medical care for the people of Laos especially Family Medicine.
